"Wrong Tree"

from "Pomp and Circumstance" EP by Casey Ruff

about

This is one of my favorite songs I've written, as the mournful horn melody returns to me all the time.

This song has been with us for a while before we recorded it, and the recording is evidence of worthwhile effort and craft. If I remember correctly, this was the first song that gave me the idea of having horns in my music. My brother pointed out the bridge is like Chicago's "Feeling Stronger Everyday", which I am completely fine with.

The imagery is on the verge of mythological, as I leaned on the symbolism heavily. A forlorn beast baying at an immovable change. Ugh. Brutal.

lyrics

Why do I try so hard, to fill your love with me?
Why do you keep your arms so hard to reach?
I'm barking up the wrong tree.
Claws broke to my toes
I'm supposed to go back home but I don't.

I've been losing my voice

Now the summers over.
The nights have gotten colder.
The leaves have turned and they burn upon the breeze.
As I've been barking up the wrong tree.
Been howling, growling, sighing, crying,
with a grief that will not ever sleep.

I've been losing my voice
